A Field Research Project for 
High School Students and Teachers

Two Black Bear cubs wre discovered by loggers when their equipment accidently overturned a log being used as a den site. The sow left the area. Biologists watched over the site until they determined she would not return, then the cubs, whose age was 4-6 weeks, were taken to the Department of Natural Resources' MacKenzie Environmental Center at Poynette where the bears were raised to yearling age. The bears were then reintroduced to the forest. This began the Bear Reintroduction and Telemetry Project which involves 3 area schools, Augusta, Fall Creek, and Altoona High Schools, Beaver Creek Field Research Station, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

This was the start of the project. As of January, 2000 we have had 8 bears in our project. We currently (Jan. 2000) have two bears out in the field and will be changing their collars so we can monitor them for another year.
