26 Acts of Kindness
Posted on December 17, 2012 by Felicia Deering
As most of us know, on December 14, 2012, twenty six people were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. In the aftermath of this horrific tragedy, the nation seemed to come together in a way; people all over the country began participating in something called "26 Acts of Kindness", doing any 26 things (one thing for every person killed) to make someone's day or life a little bit brighter. Wildlands was touched by this and decided as a school to participate in this wonderful community service act as a way to remember each precious life lost in the mass shooting and as a way to help our community and communities around us.
We brainstormed for a long time, and so far have come up with many wonderful ideas. Here are 11 of 26 acts of kindness we have come up with so far:
Community Table Volunteering (event date set for Feb. 28)
Nursing Home visitation (completed)
Shoveling sidewalks/driveways (completed)
Fundraising for non-profit organizations (in the form of a Valentine's Day meal)
Fundraising for non-profit organizations (in the form of a Masquerade Ball)
Eau Claire Humane Association Volunteering
Chippewa Humane Association Volunteering
Baking cookies for the Community Table
Polar Plunge (event date- Feb. 24)
Reading to kids at the Augusta Elementary School (completed)
Fundraising for B-Side Church
Ronald McDonald House Fundraising/Volunteering
If anyone has an idea for an act of kindness that anywhere 1 to 30 students can participate in, don't be afraid to speak up!
Once we have completed our 26 Acts of Kindness at Wildlands, please don't let that be a reason to stop going out of your way every once in a while to make someone smile. This is a great thing to do that we can all hopefully carry with us for the rest of our lives!
