Objectives:Students will record observations using as many senses as possible.
Activity: Before going to your observation point, reread what you wrote about you mental field trip. Go to your observation point and for 30 minutes record observations made with your senses in your journal. You may also compare and contrast the real observations with the mental field trip.
Rules for journal entry:
1. Record date, time and place
2. Record weather—approximate temperature, wind, precipitation, cloud cover.
3. Focus on one aspect of the forest each time you write.
4. Pretend that your journal is a friend you are talking with. Feel free to discuss ideas and ask
questions in your writing.
5. Use drawings to illustrate your thoughts. You do not have to do this, but you may draw if
you would like to. Drawing illustrates your writing, but does not replace it. You are still
expected to write.
Grading: Entries should be at least a half page for full credit (10 points). If you double-space, that means a full page. This does
not include drawings. They are extra points- up to 2 points extra.
Follow-up:Back in the classroom share journal entries with the class by exchanging journals..
