Writing(50% of your overall grade)

Journals (15%): "Daily" journals must be kept. These are hand written and reflective of what you have done for the day, what you have learned, what you are currently working on, what you hope to achieve the following day, and/or what your long and short term goals are. Pay attention to the details of your day and express them through your writing so that you can used your journal as a reference tool.

All Journals must contain the appropriate heading for each day, and use complete sentences, thoughts, paragraphs, and appropriate sketches. The heading must include the date, time, weather, and location you are writing at.

You must average 3 journal entries per week, or 27 entries each quarter. Random journal checks will take place throughout each quarter and a tally of your entries will be kept along the way. It is your responsibility to keep up with your journal entries - you cannot write 27 entries on the last day of each quarter and expect to get credit. Teachers reserve the right to refuse to read that many entries at one time.

Required Writings and Writers INC (30%): Each student will keep their own three-ring binder (or folder) writing portfolio. All pieces of writing will be kept in this binder, along with original copy, drafts, and final copy.

The Writers INC resource book will accompany writing assignments. The appropriate sections must be read through when writing that particular form for the first time. Corresponding page numbers for the writing form and your Writers INC book are listed next to each form.

A check off sheet will be kept in your writing portfolio to reference the pieces of writing you have completed during each quarter. Some of the writing forms are required; they are indicated with an asterisk and must be completed by the end of the year. You can decide what order you turn them in, but they must be turned in by the end of the year.

In your portfolio, each semester you must complete 7 different forms of writing, and 14 different forms of writing by the end of the year. You will need to have 50 pages of writing in your English portfolio by the end of the year. Up to 5 of your daily journals can count towards your 50 total pages of writing.

HINT: Keep copies of everything you write!

Wildlands Newsletter Articles (5%): Each student is responsible for writing an article for each Wildlands Newsletter publication. Articles need to be edited by two peers before turned into the student editors for final editing. You may be asked to rewrite part of your article and it is your responsibility, not the student editors.
